1. Ayers Rock (Uluru)
Where: 335 kilometers southwest of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory.
What’s there: The world’s largest monolith! This most famous of all rocks is sacred to the native tribes of the region and an awe inspiring sight.
Things to do: Ride a Harley or a camel on a tour, discover aboriginal culture, climb the rock!

2. Cape York Peninsula
Where: Far northern tip of Queensland
What’s there: Massive wilderness area, much of it unscathed by modern life.
Things to do: Go for bush walks, four-wheel driving along remote tracks, see abundant wildlife, go fishing, bird watching.
Best time to go: Dry season, avoid the summer months when the tropical weather will make much of the area inaccessible and downright uncomfortable.

3. Western Plain Zoo
Where: Dubbo, New South Wales
What’s there: Recognised as one of the world’s best open-range zoos, there are over 1500 animals from every continent roaming the grassy plains.
Things to do: Explore! Dubbo Tourism puts it this way . . . Go on a trail ride, learn to throw a boomerang, enjoy an outback BBQ, drop a line, play cricket in the park, sink your toes into the cool banks of the river and catch a glimpse of a horizon so vast is seems to run into next week.

4. Carnarvon Gorge
Where: Brisbane, between Roma and Emerald
What’s there: The rugged 16,000ha Carnarvon Gorge section of Carnarvon National Park is the most popular destination in Queensland’s central highlands.

5. Phillip Island
Where: South East from Melbourne Victoria
What’s there: Famous for the Fairy Penguins, this is a natural wildlife haven with wildlife parks, but also offers man-made tourist attractions including the Grand Prix Circuit!
Things to do: Check out the penguins as they return to their nesting sites after a hard days fishing. National Vietnam Vets Museum, Koala conservation Centre, Chocolate Factory and more.

6. Coober Pedy
Where: In the heart of the continent, Adelaide is 846kms away and Alice Springs is 685kms away.
What’s there: The Opal capital of the world, famous for the fiery gems and unique underground living quarters.
Things to do: View and buy opals, visit underground homes and bars, marvel at the “lunar” landscape.

7. Monkey Mia
Where: Monkey Mia is located about 800 km north of Perth in Shark Bay.
What’s there: Indian Ocean, beaches and friendly dolphins.
Things to do: Get close up to a dolphin, tamed and fed by locals, snorkeling, boat cruises and associated beach activities.

Where: In the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney, New South Wales
What’s there: Cool mountain air, dramatic views and heritage sites.
